New Orleans’ own Cripple Creek Theater Company has brought hilarious madness of Ubu Cocu to New Orleans. Ubu Cocu is the sequel to Ubu Roi, a French Absurdest play written by Alfred Jarry in the late 1800′s. A play so controversial, that it was outlawed in France because the audience rioted at the first, and final, staged performance, has been brought to New Orleans for the public to see. The play satirizes the wealthy and their abuse of power, a theme curiously relevant to New Orleans. Cripple Creek staged Ubu Roi last year and and is continuing this year with Ubu Cocu. The sequel continues with the main character, Ubu, the greedy, gluttonous, antihero, who is tearing across Europe and basically committing every sin imaginable, especially those involving impaling and dismemberment. Although the above description makes the play sound a little grim, but everything in the production is purely farcical. The play is full of a hilarious cast of character’s such as, Ubu’s adulteress wife, and Ubu’s conscious, a pale ghostly figure that Ubu consults , but only so he can do the exact opposite.
Ubu Cocu is currently being stage by The Cripple Creek Theater Co. and if you are looking for a hilarious, poignant, and insane theater experience, visit cripplecreekplayers.org to get tickets.
